A Full Working Solution Making AT&T Prepaid SIM Work on your iPhone
Posted by Amir on Mar 21st, 2010 | 304 commentsAfter buying a prepaid AT&T sim card to be used with my iPhone (mainly for data) while i’m in the US, I realized that AT&T blocks the data connectivity unless you have an iPhone plan on your AT&T account. But I found that when placing the same SIM on Android phone, the network data/internet connectivity works.
After reading about it quite a lot, I realized that many users are facing the same issue.. well.. I think I’ve found a full working solution for it!
What apparently is happening is that by default the iPhone pulls from AT&T an iPhone specific APN that blocks you if you don’t have a real iPhone plan on your account. To override this settings you can use Apple Configuration Utility to change the APN manually. You do NOT need to jailbreak your iPhone.
This is what you need to do to make the data/internet connectivity work on your iPhone with AT&T prepaid sim card. Please note that if you follow these steps I can’t take responsibility for any negative influence it might have while using it.
1. Place your AT&T SIM in your iphone
2. Make sure it finds the network and that you have a data package! The unlimited plan does not apply…
3. Download and install iPhone Configuration Utility from Apple (free) for your PC/MAC
4. Plug your iPhone to your PC/Mac
5. Create a new configuration profile on the iPhone Configuration Utility
6. Go to “advance” and create a new APN by giving it any name you want and any identifier you wish. Type the following in the relevant fields:
APN: wap.cingular
User Name: wap@cingulargprs.com
Password: CINGULAR1
Proxy wireless.cingular.com port: 80
7. Save the profile and then select your iphone name under “devices”
8. Click on “install” button near the configuration profile name you just created (check your iPhone screen, you might be asked to tap on ‘Install’ there as well)
9. Turn on and off the Airplane mode (or restart your iPhone)
That’s it! now it should be able to access the web using the network data connectivity, same as the Android or any other device can do with the same SIM card..
When you’ll want to go back to your old SIM, just place it in and go to your settings on your iPhone and uninstall the profilfe. Or you can use the configuration utility to remove, what ever works better for you.
UPDATE (OCT. 5th 2011): You can now get a micro sim in the ATT store instead of the regular sized card, so you dont have to cut it if you’r using an iPhone4. They did not ask me to pay more for it. In addition, you should note that the GoPhone Unlimited plan with the unlimited data does not apply to smartphones including the iPhone (in regards to 3G Data). So you have to purchase a separate data plan (e.g. 500MB for 25$) to make the internet work for you.
UPDATE (DEC. 28th 2011): Several of you have asked about the iPhone 4S, some have already commented that this approach still works with the new iPhone and iOS 5.0.1, and now I confirmed it myself to be working OK.

I’ll get service intermittently, but have not been successful at getting it to work smoothly.
One thing abt the config util, I don’t see where to change the wireless proxy

If you did’nt set the proxy, this probably the issue.. you should see it where you configured the APN (under advanced). if it is not there, make sure you are using one of the latest versions of the iPhone confiugration utility (mine is 2.1 [163])

Hi Tamir, yes it should work. make you have the right package though… the unlimited does not work with this method.
i have a iphone 4 with the at&t prepaid unlimited for $50…it is jailbroken since i used to have tmobile…how can i have the data working on it using at&t?

nope, you have to use a limited data plan (you can add it i believe to the unlimited package)

Hi Nir, very simple. you walk in to an att store and ask for a gophone sim card (or micro sim for iphone4) with a “pay per minute” plan. it costs 25$ and you walk out the store.
then you place the new sim in your phone and dial 611. you already have 25$ in your account so you use those to purchase a data package – i suggest the 500mb for 25$.
that’s it – assuming you already installed the configuration profile you should be able to surf now, if you can’t switch the flight mode on and then off.
if you plan to use your phone for US domestic calls/text, you can add additional 50$ to your account and switch to the unlimited plan (it does not related to the data package).

I have AT&T $50/month unlimited talk and text PLUS, separately I have been adding $5/mo data package each month. It worked for 2 months, now it does not work any more. Anyone knows what is going on. I have an iPhone 3G iOS 04.23 baseband 06.15. BTW my GPS worked fine. Some say the 06.15 ruins the GPS and everything worked until I start getting this message “cannot connect to the server” I try wap.cingular, isp.cingula, att.broadband, att.blue, and att.mvxx NO luck.
I downloaded an APN to work with my pay as you go phone for data and it worked fine until a few days ago. I didn’t often use 3G data mostly wireless. I downloaded the apn directly from the iphone at the nzdownload cite but maybe that’s what’s not working. So I tried downloading the iphone config utility bu can’t make heads or tails of “create a new configuration profile- where?

Still in Israel, I tried to follow your instructions to set my iphone 4. The iphone configuration utility version is 3.5.0.289.
I could not find the “advanced” menu, but I could go directly to the APN set-up. After entering the parameters per your instructions, I could not find the “save” control.
More questions: What are the parameters to enter in the “General” section . like what to enter in the “Identifier”.
Is there a way that you can help me? Can I can call you and set it on-line?

Does it make any difference if they have registered your imei when you purchased the go phone sim (ie that they know you have an iPhone) or will the above steps work regardless?
Technically they know your IMEI (and device type) once you’re on their network, even if you didn’t registered it with them when you purchased your SIM. So I don’t think it should make a difference.. but yet i can be sure what process they are following.

hi there! I tried the APN changer via unlockit website (havent tried via the iphone configuration utility). Before doing so, purchased the $4.99 1MB feature package from ATT. It worked and can access data. However, I kept receiving a notice that $xx has been deducted from my remaining balance by using data despite the fact that Im using wifi. (I have wifi at home, work, and school). Has anybody experienced the same thing? Is there a solution to this?
when your useing your wifi turn your cellular data off in the settings. ;)

I did what you instructed. the internet worked fine as far as safari. but certain apps, such as facebook, would just be stuck trying to get info from another page. i.e go from news feed into the messages section. and it just doesnt show anything. is there anything i can do to fix this, or is this just part of the deal? thank you for your time.

Not sure if the issue you describe relates to this procedure. Currently i’m the USA, and don’t have this problem (while using ATT sim and this configuration). The best way to test it is to try it around a place with wifi. after you reproduce the problem with the 3g network, switch to wifi and see if it solves it.

Just before finding this guide I called AT&T and was shocked to find that they actually go out of their way to block data access on prepaid Iphones. What a bunch of crap.
Though customer service was really nice, she was more than willing to refund the 100MB package I just purchased. She seemed a little too anxious to get it removed. Fortunately I found this shortly after hanging up!

I am trying to activate the original iPhone on a prepaid sim and when I activate the phone then swap the sim the connect to iTunes screen pops up. I am an AT&T mobility employee if there is anything I need to change on the account, I can find the person that can do it. This is driving me nuts.

Thanks for the great solution! After reading this article it took me less than 30 minutes to resize the AT&T prepaid Go SIM to a MicroSIM, create and load the configuration file and now I am using the 3G Dataplan on my Factory Unlocked (CA) iPhone 4.
I have a straight talk phone that uses AT&T and has unlimited everything, could I put that sim card into the iPhone 4, do what you said and have it work like a regular iPhone and I just keep paying for the account?

I live in the UK and have a factory unlocked iPhone 4 and when I purchased it the apple employee told me to always check that the carrier’s SIM cards in another country wouldn’t lock my phone to their network. Will my iPhone remain unlocked using this method or do AT&T sims lock the phone to their network?

Hi Ian, I actually never heard about such a restriction. When your phone is unlocked, you can use it with any sim card, for any carrier. In fact, I’ve used an unlcoked iPhone originally from Orange with AT&T and it continued to work perfectly with other carriers and sim cards afterwards.
If you purchase a Windows 7 phone (in my case a Dell Venue pro) it WILL lock it to a carrier (T-mobile in my case). Very annoying. Now I did call Dell and they gave me the carrier unlock code but it should never have done this in the first place so it is possible the iphone may do the same

Works perfectly on iPhone 4. Had to restart the phone after installing the configuration profile before it started working.
i just have a question regarding the data charges incurred monthly. do u guys stick with the monthly 100mb,and 200mb prepaid data plans availaible or can use the regular smartphone data plan used on postpaid connections??

Hi Miguel, when you’re back home just delete the configuration profile you added and you are good (you can do it from the device itself).

I actually learned about ATT preventing data plans on iphones thru their 800 customer support line. I was so disappointed until I google’d and found this article.
I just did it on my iphone 4 and my pre-paid data plan is up and running now. So happy now as I will never ever consider signing up on any post paid plans.

Did not work for me. I have an iPhone 3Gs and a PAYAYGO card.I changed the configuration profile as directed. Disconnected the phone and installed the sim card. I turned the phone off and back on. I get no service. Any suggestion?

I just followed your steps, i have an iphone 4 currently running 4.3.2, everything worked perfect installation wise, i have a prepaid with unlimited data, but when i open safari it opens media net and says “The account does not have sufficient funds to complete this request. Please replenish your account balance and try again”. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

@Amir: I have a “Monthly Unlimited Plan” from AT&T but I got the same error message than Zion when I opened Safari. I have an iPhone 4 too, running iOS 4.3.1.
I was using the 100mb for 19$ package. One of my reader just reported that it is not working with the unlimited package but it is working with the others (where you buy mb package).
I have the same issue as Jose…i’ve followed the steps and no avail has it worked. any help would be greatly appreciated.
E.H, it does not work with the unlimited data plan. You need to purchase the other data packages such as 25$ for 500mb (as lewis mentioned).

im getting notifications now and emails but when i try to go into my web browser it says “CANNOT OPEN PAGE:safari cannot open the page, there was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP).
if you get notification then you should have no problem to surfe the web. try restart the browser or the device.

This really did the trick. iPhone 4 running iOs 4.3.3. Bought in Taiwan. Visiting Seattle and bought AT&T Go SIM. Cut it down to mini size and got phone and message functions, but no data. Followed you instructions here, and PRESTO! now have full data functions. Thanks!

It should work. make you have the right package though… the unlimited does not work with this method.
and check again the proxy settings in the profile you configured.
so what go phone plan should I get if want internet?

So if I just download the custom apn from unlockit.co.nz is it the same thing? Because I did that and my Internet keeps saying “safari cannot connect to the server” as aposed to saying “safari cannot connect because it isnt connected to the Internet. ” I have an iPhone 4 jailbroken on 4.3.3
Worked great Thanks for this post, just got back from new York having used safari & google maps. from uk and have iPhone 4 (04.10.01), I unlocked from O2 website which is only a form then you get txt, plug into iTunes then it’s unlocked to any sim without having to plug in again ( includes USA sim). Then I brought AT&T. prepaid 3G micro sim (orange colour)from eBay £9. Registered sim on website using a imei number from a really old samsung (never need to put sim in) chose $2 a day plan but didn’t add any funds. Then I left uk, when I got to new York I put micro sim into iPhone, went to electrical shop brought $15 top up recipt pin rang 611 added funds but said data option was unavailable so went outside mcdonalds used there free wifi went on AT&T website and chose $15 100mb data that worked so whilst still outSide mcdonalds I went onto http://www.unlockit. To change apn, chose carrier AT&T wap and put username and password as u stated above and that was it done, sounds long but only took 15mins in new York, didn’t have to buy any calling credit just added the $15 and used all for data, 100mb lasted 5 days using google maps on and off, well worth doing, thanks again
Just to add, over the phone wouldn’t let me add data nor did the AT&T machines so added funds on website. Phone isn’t jail broken

I can’t get internet on iPhone 4. it give me a message “could not activate cellular data network. you are not subscribed to a cellular data service.”

Works a treat! For future reference I had a UK Orange sim in my iPhone 4 and purchased an AT&T PAYG with a 100MB dataplan.

It worked great for 3 weeks until it stopped working… I checked my balance at an AT&T store and I still have 180mb to go. The guy there mentioned/insinuated that AT&T might have blocked it. Have you heard of this? Do you think creating a new profile on the iPhone Configuration Utility would make it work again?
Purchased 50$ unlimted monthly plan using att pantech vibe, this morn put the monthly pay att sim in iphone 3gs jb using fake apn from website internet works….for now
4.3.5 (8L1) 05.16.02 3gs….these are my current phone specs. I tried the unlockit and the utility settings. Without the port 80 and proxy wireless, I get nothing. When I add them back in I get a Media.net message saying to call 611 or go to gophone to add data. I have a plan for the min. amount auto added each month and online it shows I have a balance. I can’t seem to get any data to work except with wifi. Any ideas?
did you try adding a limited data plan? i think the min is 10mb

Hi Amir. I bought a used iPhone original model thinking I could put a ATT GoPhone sim in it to make it work as a pre-paid phone. I bought a cheap GoPhone, activated it and installed it in my iPhone, but keep getting a message saying the registration through iTunes could not be done at the current time. It angered me since I have seen numerous articles on the web saying this would work. I tried the APN changer which didn’t work either. In the mean time I contacted ATT on-line and they said the GoPhone sim will NOT work. So I bought a blank sim (regular 3g card)and tried to register it through iTunes…nothing happens…no connection to ATT. So I called ATT customer service who again said the GoPhone sim won’t work, but they could activate the newer 3g sim card, but had to run a credit check. I saw on-line that they had the same deal…no contract, no service activation charge but a credit check was needed. I qualify for a Senior package for $29 which is not bad ..200 anytime minutes, 500 Night & Weekend minutes and unlimited “mobile to mobile” minutes… so really not a bad deal. But before I do this I want to ask you if there is any way to use the GoPhone sim I already bought or for that matter activate the other 3g sim? Again.. the blank 3g sim installed will not even connect through iTunes to register. What do you suggest?

I’m visiting the US soon with my unlocked (not jailbroken) iPhone 4 and I already have GoPhone SIM card. I’ve already activated the SIM card, have my phone number, and have added the data plan required to support the iPhone, and chopped the SIM to the correct size. So I should be good to go. My question is: is the Apple iPhone Configuration Utility really necessary in order to get things working? Can you not just edit the APN settings on the phone by hand on the phone directly? I can certainly edit them at the moment in the UK, with my normal O2 SIM card in the phone. (I don’t really want to take my laptop with me to the US, so I wanted to check whether I really have to bring one in order to change the iPhone’s settings after I arrive in the US.) Does putting the GoPhone SIM into the iPhone cause the APN settings to become uneditable by hand?

Hi Chris, When you place the ATT SIM card then the settings to edit the APN manually on the iphone are getting disabled.
You should be able to mail yourself the configuration profile and install it when you’r there from the mail on your iphone. But you should try it first while you’re stil in the UK.
gophone web will give you edge or 3g speed for web on iphones 3gs or iphone 4. could someone advise.

Hi Tony, first advice is to double check the APN details. Secondly is to try a reboot to the device while the ATT SIM is inside.

I signed for the prepaid goPhone (without the phone), got the micro SIM and was able to setup on the iPhone, but couldn’t get the data to work even changing my APN.
With the data package, all is working fine now and with 3G speed.

Hey amir i’m planning on buying a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc lt15a and put at&t $50 unlimted plan on it but I don’t want to buy a data plan would I have 2g EDGE instead of 3g or no internet at all and would I need to configure the phones APN for the internet to work
Hi Duwi, sorry but i can’t tell… my assumption is that you will have to add the specific data plan. According to ATT the unlimited plan (with data) will not work for smartphones, so i believe that only WAP surfing will be enabled with this package.
Amir thanks for this tremendously helpful advice! By following your tips I have been able to get data on my factory unlocked iPhone 4 without any issues. I have been back and forth to Canada several times. Each time I go, I simply remove the custom APN and pop in my Rogers sim. Never had a problem. When I return to the US, I pop in the ATT sim and load the custom APN back on the phone. Has worked flawlessly to this point.
Anyone know if this works on iOS5?

I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 5 running on Go phone unlimited service for AT&T. the data works sometimes on 3G, but mostly runs on Edge when you install the APN profile.
do you mean to have to disable 3g in order to make it work?
I finally got up the courage to try this because I figured if I messed it up I would just go buy the iPhone 4S :) I was nervous but I was able to figure it out and after a restart I had 3G service showing! Thank you! I really was missing using Maps when we were on the road! Now I will truly know how much data I use a month since I will be watching my Rollover date! Thanks again!

I have a completely reset off-contract AT&T locked Iphone 4. I just ordered an AT&T Z221 Prepaid GoPhone, a $25 GoPhone Refill Card and a Micro SIM cutter. If I understand correctly, first I set up my new account online with the AT&T Z221 Prepaid GoPhone, get my phone number, order the data plan, etc. Once that’s working, I cut the sim to fit in the Iphone 4. A couple quick questions come to mind since I’ve never activated a completely reset Iphone before:
#1. When I put the cut sim in the Iphone 4, will it instantly recognize the sim, or do I need to go to Itunes to activate the phone first?
#2 After I Download and install iPhone Configuration Utility from Apple. Can I go to Itunes to backup to my New Iphone 4 from my 3GS, or do I do this before running the utility.

I just wanted to say thanks — data usage abroad is ridiculously expensive (I am visiting New York from Norway), on my first day I managed to spend $58 on my Telenor subscription. Your advice is super helpful, and will make my visit much more enjoyable.
I would suggest that everyone buys an initial plan for more then $25 though. That way you’ll be left with some money in your account after you buy the $25 data plan. I didn’t, and I’ll have to go in to an AT&T store tomorrow to refill my voice plan. Not a big deal, but something to consider.
If anyone from Norway is reading this, remember you have to call Telenor or NetCom to have them remove the operator lock, and then do a restore on your iPhone (if that’s your device) before you can use an AT&T plan.

Amir, I recently bought a iphone 4 from a friend through facebook and it is locked to at&t. She told me that I would need to purchase a new micro sim from at&t when I was ready to activate the phone. her original sim is in the phone still but it is presumably dead. I do not want to be under contract and am considering a pay as u go method. Do I need to jailbreak/ unlock first, and is this even possible with a iphone that has no active service? Can I simply go buy the gophone sim card, cut it down,install it in the iphone and it will work? do I need to activate a gophone account by buyibg a cheap phone w/ simcard and then jailbreak/unlock iphone and transfer cards or what is the exact process you would recommend I use to get this running on a pay as u go plan?

Once you have an activated gophone sim / micro sim card, it is enough to use it to activate your iphone. but you’ll be still locked to ATT and will not be able to use it with another carrier sim card.
Is there anyway in getting mms to work with this also?? Mines not letting me send.
i’m not sure if the MMS is enabled on ATT GoPhone accounts. if it is, then all you have to do is to configure the mms settings (mms apn, proxy, etc) via the configuration utility, similar to the configuration of the internet APN.

If I jail break my iPhone 4 version 4.3.5 and follow your instructions will I be able to use data without a data package? ie I want to get free data and am still trying to understand the whole jailbreak and unlock thing is this possible!?! Please help me I desperatly need to cut back on my bill

I have an iPhone 3GS 16 mb with iOS 5 installed. I ran the IPhone configuration utility and entered the info in your article for the APN. I saved this new profile, and attempted to install. Now, if I attempt to connect on the 3G network, I get the error where I need a data plan, which I have already purchased. Any idea what I need to do next?

I just tried and the voice and text works but no data. I did purchase the Go-phoneSim card and added $25 500mb data plan. It’s not the unlimited as stated in this thread.
I thought I did everything correctly…
In the phone settings, Under “profile” it does shows it to be verified and in the “more deatils” tab under advanceed setting, it shows the Name: wap.cingular, Username: wap@cingulargprs.com.
Is there something else maybe I missed in the configuration utility? Does the phone have to be unlocked?

i have iphone 4 unlocked & jailbroken. but when i ask the CS about the At&T prepaid with $50 ( unlimited talk,text and data ) they said there is nothing work for Iphone so what should i do? or what prepaid simcard will work for unlocked iphone 4? any suggestion?
Officially AT&T are not supporting GoPhone with iPhone. The approach that i suggested above is a workaround to make it work, but it is not guaranteed. Anyhow the 50$ package is not good for iPhone – you will need to buy a limited package in order for it to work.
How did you buy the microsim? Did you have to show them your iPhone? How do you get a microsim with a prepaid plan? Do they activate it in store or do you do that at home?
I just walked in to their store and asked for GoPhone sim card. I did not show them my phone. I asked if it is possible to get a micro sim, and it was not problem for them.
This method works perfectly on an iPad 1st gen 3G. Be patient on the first connection, give it plenty of time to load the first webpage. Once past that, it loads fast even after a reboot.

It worked, thank you so much! Unlockit.nz was not working any more, but this did. Yes, I had to call and add an additional smart phone data package to my $50 unlimited plan on GoPhone. And two additional steps should be added to this:
1. Install the profile on your iPhone by pressing install on the iPhone itself too
2. Turn data off and on again in iPhone

Yes, yes, yes! Just like Deckspin, suddenly two weeks ago Unlockit.nz was not working any more for me after it had been working just fine. I followed your directions Amir, and now I have data again.
I’m on an off contract iPhone 4 running iOS 5 using Go Phone’s $2 a day plan and a $10 a month pay as you go data plan.
As soon as I get my iPhone 4S I will confirm that it works on there as well here on the forum — unless somebody already has tried it.

I called the AT&T customer service and the lady told me that I couldn’t use the internet with the gophone sim for Iphone that it was blocked, but then she was nice enough to unlock it for me.

Instructions worked perfectly, but internet connection starts so slowly that it times out. The 3g ws enabled- I tried turning 3g off, tried turning phone off/on, same results, it attempted to connect, but timed out because it took so long. What do you suggest?

I can confirm that this does indeed work on an unlocked iPhone 4S. What’s more, I purchased the 4S off-contract (the AT&T model) which were carrier unlocked, but came with an AT&T micro SIM. I was confused for a bit while trying to use the iPhone configuration utility. The key was to click on “Install” on the iPhone when the profile screen appears on the phone.

you should check your data package balance, this was usually the problem in case
hmm. well after reboot it seems to access the web consistently BUT – when I ran tests side by side with an original 2007 Edge iphone – theres was no difference. In other words, it seems I’m getting edge speeds despite the indicator saying 3g.
Anyone else do speed tests to verify they’re getting better than edge speeds?

Great work. I recently bought AT&T locked iPhone4S (firmware 5.0.1) without contract. I want to activate my current gophone on it. I dont need the internet at this point on my phone. When i called customer care to transfer my present number to a new sim (micro one with Iphone), they said that it will not end up working on iPhone. The GoPhone will only work for a day or two and once the iPhone updates the software, your phone will stop working.
Please suggest what could be done if I want to use my GoPhone with it

I followed all of the steps, and everything was perfect installation wise. But when i get on Safari i receive this message, “To use data services, you must have a data package or sufficient funds. Call 611 or go to att.com/mygophone now to replenish or purchase.” I use AT&T APN settings and I have the $50 unlimited plan, could someone help please???

To do this does the type of iPhone matter? In other words, does it have to be an ATT&T phone, a Verizon phone, an unlocked phone, or does it matter?
Yes, the I phone must accept AT&T sim cards so it can either be a sim free iPhone are one that is locked to AT&T.
It didn’t work for my unlocked (though bought through AT&T) 4S. :( I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I have a text/call plan + a data plan (just 10mb for testing first). Text and calling work fine though.
Check the iPhone settings and verify that the profile you created is listed on the installed profiles. Other than that turning flight mode on/off may also help.
PROFILE INSTALLATION FAILED:
The profile could not be added to the device.

make sure you fill out all the required data in “general” information tab as well as the “advanced” tab. Then it should install

Amir, many thanks for the info. Just to let you know that I just went into an AT&T store, asked for a $25 GoPhone microsim for data only. The assistant tried to warn me that it most likely wouldn’t work in anythign but a GoPhone. I told her I wasn’t worried.
Installed the sim in my JB UL iPhone4 and downloaded the AT&T APN settings from unlockit.co.nz. Within a few minutes I was online with 3G speed. TO make absolutely sure, I switched off WiFi and ran a speed test over 3G and got 2.07Mbps down and 0.61Mbps up. Not bad compared to the pathetic 2G speeds I’m getting through my MiFi with T-Mobile PAYG data.
I would have tried the iPhone configuration utility but I’m away from home with only my iPad for company. The unlockit.co.nz APN worked fine.
As an aside, I tried to use the AT&T sim in my Huawei e856 MiFi but it won’t get a signal. (I use the microsim in a mini sim holder. Any ideas if I can get the AT&T GoPhone sim with a data package to work in this MiFi?

Thanks – great hack does not require jailbreak.
One small comments or change:
1) AT&T changed it’s apn requirements. You only need the access point name. You don’t need the username, password and proxy anymore. I only used access point name and it worked fine for me.

Hello! So I followed your steps to the T and it did not work. When I turn the phone off and back on, it still shows up as ‘E’ and says im not subsrcibed to a data network. I have the $50 monthly, but I bought the $25/500mb Data feature also. I entered all the info into my ADAVANCED section for my new profile but still no dice, I also tried taking the sim card out and putting it back in and turning airplane mode on and off… Any advice?! Please help I need my data badly lol.

Just got the mircro sim from at&t store today. The rep set me up with the voice component. He knows I am using an iPhone so told me data won’t work. After he set everything up. I topped up the account with $50 and walked out of the store with the iPhone working properly with voice.
I found a wifi connection and got the apn settings (Cingular wap) and called 611 to buy the $25/50b data package. Data now works on the iPhone as I’m typing this review from mine.

I have a similar situation — unlocked iPhone 4S bought in Canada (where I live). On a previous trip to New York, I got an ATT gophone microsim, with a NY number and loaded up the gophone account with $$. At that time I hadn’t tracked down the info regarding data plan setup and APN configurations.
A couple of questions for you on the Canada/US APN and configuration.
1) Sounds like it was easy peasy to get the APN configuration down on the iPhone from WIFI while you were in the states.
a) do you just remove that configuration/APN setup when you return to Canada (and put your Canadian SIM back in)?
b) is it possible to set it up before leaving Canada? (I guess that question also includes — can there be more than one profile on the iPhone and the user can switch between therm?)
2) Adding data plan.
a) my plan would be to add the data plan on via my online GoPhone account (which has a nice slush fund balance on it) rather than call 611 — do you foresee any issues with that?

I am trying to use an AT&T microSIM for the iPad 1 (data, obviously) and use it in a new Iphone4S for data only. I have followed your instructions. I get the message ‘could not activate cellular data network – you are not subscribed to a cellular data service’ even though I just activated 3Gs for 30USD direct on the AT&T website.
Do you have any idea why it isn’t working? And any work around? I assume the SIM isn’t recognized in the phone? Any way to change those settings? Would love to be able to figure that out ASAP. Thoughts anyone?

Hi Amir, I did everything you said and my iPhone 3Gs continues to say “No Service”. I went to an AT&T store and bought a $25 gophone prepaid plan, as well as a $5 data plan with it, then went home and put the SIM card in my iPhone. At the top left corner of the iPhone screen, it says No Service. I’ve tried rebooting the iPhone, turning it off and on, switching it to airplane mode then normal again, etc. I just don’t have service with this SIM card on my iPhone, but the SIM card works on a regular gophone. So, the card does have service, just not on my iPhone. What am I doing wrong??
